How to Knit Men’s Socks with a Hybrid Heel
Cuff and Leg
Cast on 64 stitches using the standard (long-tail) cast-on method onto double-pointed needles (DPNs). Distribute the stitches across 4 needles as follows:
- Needles 1 and 4 (back of the sock): 15 stitches each;
- Needles 2 and 3 (front of the sock): 17 stitches each.
Work the cuff to a height of 6.5 cm (approx. 2.5 inches). Begin the round with 1 purl stitch, then continue in k2, p2 ribbing, ending with 1 purl stitch.
Leg
Knit the leg to a height of about 13 cm (approx. 5 inches), or to your desired length, using 6×2 ribbing (k6, p2).
Pattern distribution:
- Needle 1: p1, k6, p2, k6;
- Needle 2: p2, k6, p2, k6, p1;
- Needle 3: p1, k6, p2, k6, p2;
Needle 4: k6, p2, k6, p1.
Hybrid Heel
Socks with a hybrid heel are worked with a short heel flap and an instep gusset. The lower part of the heel is similar to a boomerang heel and is shaped using short rows. This technique increases the volume in the instep for a more comfortable fit.
Heel Flap
Place the 34 stitches of the top of the foot onto one needle. Transfer the stitches from needles 1 and 4 onto a single double-pointed needle — 30 stitches total.Work a short heel flap in stockinette stitch, knitting back and forth in rows. Knit the first and last stitch of every row (both right and wrong sides).
For sizes EU 40–41, work 10 rows; for EU 42–43, work 12 rows.
Finish in the middle of a row.

Upper Section (Short Rows)
Divide the heel stitches into three equal sections of 10 stitches each and place markers between them. Work short rows, starting from the middle of a right-side row.
Work the last stitch of each row as a double stitch (German short rows). As a result, a double stitch is formed on one side of the heel in each row. The rows become shorter, and the number of worked stitches decreases.
Row 1 (½ RS row): Knit all stitches. Turn.
Row 2 (WS): Make a double stitch from the first stitch, bring the yarn forward between the needles, and purl all stitches. Turn.
Row 3 (RS): Make a double stitch, then knit to the double stitch. Turn.
Row 4 (WS): Make a double stitch, bring the yarn forward, and purl to the double stitch. Turn.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until all stitches in the side sections have been worked into double stitches.
Leave the double stitches on the side needles.
(For instructions on working double stitches, see the “German Short Rows” section in the socks with a hybrid heel pattern.)
Transition Rounds
Round 1: Knit 15 sts, pick up 5 (6) sts along the heel edge, work the 34 instep stitches in pattern: p2, (k6, p2) × 4, pick up 5 (6) sts along the other side of the heel, knit 15 sts.
Round 2: Knit 20 (21) sts, (p2, k6) × 4, p2, knit 20 (21) sts.
Place the newly picked-up stitches together with the instep stitches on hold.

Lower Heel
Begin working from the center of the heel.
Row 1 (RS): Knit the stitches of the center section and 1 stitch from the side section. Turn.
Row 2 (WS): Make a double stitch, purl the center stitches and 1 stitch from the side section. Turn.
Row 3 (RS): Make a double stitch, knit to the double stitch from the previous row, knit the double stitch together, then knit 1 more stitch from the side section. Turn.
Row 4 (WS): Make a double stitch, purl to the double stitch from the previous row, purl the double stitch together, then purl 1 more stitch. Turn.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until no double stitches remain. Finish after half of a right-side row — at the center of the heel.

Transition to Working in the Round
Continue knitting across all stitches. To do this:
- On needles 1 and 4 (sole stitches), transfer 5 (6) stitches each that were picked up along the edge of the heel flap.
- On needles 2 and 3, place 17 stitches each for the top of the foot.
Gusset and Foot for Socks with a hybrid heel
Continue working in the round:
- Sole stitches — in stockinette stitch;
Top of the foot — in 6×2 ribbing (k6, p2).
Gusset Decreases
Round 1: Knit 17 (18) sts, k2tog (right-leaning decrease), k1, p2, (k6, p2) × 4, k1, ssk (left-leaning decrease), knit 17 (18) sts
Round 2: Work all stitches as established
Repeat these decrease rounds until you return to the original stitch count.
Foot
Continue working the foot in pattern. On the last round, knit all stitches. At the same time, redistribute one edge stitch from the front of the sock to the back.The foot length from the center of the heel should measure 21 (22.5) cm / approx. 8.25 (8.9) inches.

Boomerang Toe
The best way to complement socks with a hybrid heel is with a boomerang toe. The toe is worked on the sole side over 32 stitches. Before starting, divide the stitches into 3 sections: 10, 12, and 10 stitches, and place markers between them.
Upper Toe (Short Rows)
Work short rows, starting from the middle of a right-side row.
Row 1 (½ RS row): Knit all stitches. Turn.
Row 2 (WS): Make a double stitch, bring the yarn forward between the needles, and purl all stitches.
Transition Row
Work one transition row, starting from the middle of the sole. Knit all double stitches together as single stitches.

Lower Toe
Begin working from the center of the sole.
Row 1 (RS): Knit the center stitches and 1 stitch from the side section.
Place the needles for the top and sole stitches parallel to each other and join the stitches using the Kitchener stitch (grafting).
Knit the second sock in the same way. Weave in the ends and block the finished socks with a hybrid heel.
