How to tie socks with hearts

Leg

Using light beige yarn and smaller double-pointed needles cast on 50[60] sts loosely. Distribute sts over 4 of the 5 needles ( =12, 13, 13, 12 [15,15,15,15] sts on each needle) and, taking care not to twist cast-on edge and using 5th needle, work in rounds as follows:

Work in rib in round 3 cm. Change to larger needles. Cont in stocking st in round.

Using light beige yarn knit 2 rnds. Beg and ending rnds as indicated, cont in fair isle patt from chart as folls:

Rnd 1: rep 10 st patt 5(6) times. Work rnds 1-16, then work rnds 1-6 (=3 heart stripes).

Using light beige yarn knit 1 rnd.

Heel Flap and Gusset

Start the heel flap socks with hearts. Using light beige yarn work sts of needle I. onto needle IV. =24[30] sts. Leave sts on needle II. and III.waiting. Work the 24[30] heel sts back and forth in rows in patt as folls:

WS: Row 1: sl1wyf (=with yarn in front), purl to end.

RS: Row 2: * sl1wyb (=with yarn in back), K1, rep from * to end.

Rep rows 1-2 12(15) times =24[30] rows.

Turn Heel

Cont in heel flap patt as before.

RS: Row 1: Work until you have 9[11] sts left on your left hand needle, sl1,K1,psso, turn.

WS: Row 2: sl1wyf, P6[8], P2tog, turn.

RS: Row 3: sl1wyb, work until you have 8[10] sts left on your left hand needle, sl1,K1,psso, turn.

Rep rows 2-3 until all sts have been worked, ending with a RS row. Note that the number of sts left on your left hand needle is decreased by one every other row. Divide 8[10] heel sts onto needle I. =4[5] sts and needle IV. =4[5] sts.

I Needle. : K4[5], pick up and knit 13[16] sts along left edge of heel flap

Needle II. and III.: knit,

IV Needle: pick up and knit 13[16] sts along right edge of heel flap, K4[5].

Join for working in rnds = 60[72] sts.

Shape Gusset

Size 30 only: put last st on needle III. onto needle IV.

Cont in patt from chart as folls:

Rnd 9 (Dec rnd): Needle I. : work 13 sts in patt from chart (= 1 patt rep + 3 sts), using light beige yarn work until you have 2 sts left on needle I., K2tog

Needle II. and III.: work in patt from chart, beg from 3rd [6th ] st in chart,

Needle IV: sl1, K1, psso, using light beige yarn K5[2], cont in patt, beg from 7th st in chart.

Twist yarns in back of work to prevent from forming too long loops.
