Not only ordinary citizens choose hats with knit knit stitch for their wardrobe. Famous designers create catwalk looks using knitted hats.

The hat knitting pattern is very simple. Even a novice needlewoman can create a simple model that fits any style of clothing in just one evening.

To professionally knit such a hat, it is enough to learn how to make simple calculations and be able to knit front and back loops. We will help you master the calculation methodology and link the proposed popular models.

How to knit a hats stockinette stitch

A hats stockinette stitch will never go out of fashion, so any needlewoman should be able to knit such hats.
The proposed technique will allow you to independently make calculations and knit a hat with any number of wedges with paired and unpaired decreases in loops.
The number of wedges in a knitted headdress can be different. The most popular among knitters are hats with 4 and 6 wedges.

Calculation of loops for knitting hats stockinette stitch

Consider the sequence of calculating the number of loops needed to knit a hat with front stitch:

  1. We knit a sample to determine the density of knitting. Let’s say we got 10 cm * 10 cm in the sample – 16 st * 18 rows.
  2. We select the number of wedges for the model, for example – 8.
  3. Determine the number of loops in the cap. To do this, you need to multiply the knitting density by the size of the cap and divide the result by 10. In order for the cap to sit tight, the head circumference obtained during measurements must be reduced by 3 or 5%. For example, for a size 56 hat with a knitting density of 16 sts in 10 cm, you need to dial – 86 loops: (56 cm * 95%) * 16 st = 53 cm * 16 st /10 = 85 st.
  4. In order for all wedges to be exactly the same, we divide the estimated number of loops by the number of wedges. If the number of loops in one wedge turns out to be fractional, then the value must be rounded up to the nearest whole number, 85 st / 8 = 10,6. Ounded up to 11 st.
  5. It remains to clarify how many loops you need to dial for the hat. To do this, the number of loops (taking into account rounding) in one wedge, multiply by the number of wedges – 11 st. * 8 = 88 st.

Calculation of rows for knitting hats stockinette stitch

The sequence for calculating the number of rows for knitting a hat with front stitch:

  • Let’s measure the depth of the hat or use the table, which shows the height of the base hat, depending on the size of the headgear and age.
Age Нead circumference Cap height
0-3 month 34-40 cm 12-14 cm
3-6 month 41-44 cm 15-16 cm
6-12 month 45-46 cm 16-17 cm
1-2 years 47-48 cm 16-17 cm
2-3 years 49-50 cm 17-18 cm
3-5 years 51-54 cm 18-20 cm
Child over 5 years old, woman 54-57 cm 19-22 cm
Grown man 58-60 cm 21-23 cm
  • To determine the number of rows, we multiply the height of the cap by the number of rows that

we got when knitting the sample. We divide the result by 10. For size 56, the height of the cap will be 21 cm. With a knitting density of 18 st / 10 cm we get – 38 rows.

21 cm * 18 st. / 10 = 38 rows.

Reducing loops on a hat with knitting needles

The hats stockinette stitch with the classic option of closing the crown decreases after 1 row and has 1 decrease in each wedge.
In order to calculate the number of rows of decreases, it is necessary to multiply the number of loops in 1 wedge by 2 and subtract 2 from the result.

For example: 12 st * 2 – 2 = 22 r.

Decrease is sometimes done on each row to make the decrease line shorter. The crown will turn out to be more rounded, The number of rows of the main part is obtained by subtracting the number of rows of decreases from the total number of rows in the header:

38 r. – 22 r. = 18 r.

Calculator for calculating stitches and rows of caps

To simplify the calculations, you can use the online Calculator of stitches and rows for knitting a hat.

Hats stockinette stitch will be calculated instantly. It is enough to enter the results of measurements of the head and the density of knitting into the cells of the calculator and select the frequency of decreases and the number of wedges.

The calculator will calculate the number of loops and rows before and after the decrease.

Elf hat for baby

Knitted baby hats with funny elongated crowns are very popular. For loving mothers, a child dressed in a cute headdress is involuntarily associated with a small fairy-tale creature.

hats-stockinette-stitch

Needlewomen are happy to knit simple hats with a front stitch with an unusual look and call them with love – an elf hat or a gnome hat.

The secret of the pointed crown is bulky yarn and a small amount of wedges. Today I will tell novice needlewomen how to knit a hat for a baby closed with 4 wedges.

Hat size: for size – 35, 40, 45 cm.

Materials:

  1. Yarn Drops “DROPS BIG MERINO” – 100% merino sheep wool (75 m – 50 gr.) – 1 skein.
  2. Circular knitting needles (line 40 cm) – 4.5, 5 mm.
  3. Hosiery needles for the smallest hat and for closing the crown – 4.5, 5 mm.
  4. 17 stitches in width and 22 rows in height with stocking stitch = 10 x 10 cm.

Knitting tension:

17 stitches in width and 2 rows in height with stocking stitch = 10 x 10 cm.

Calculation of stitches for knitting hats

  1. For size 35 cm, you need to dial 56 stitches – (35 cm * 17p (knitting density)) / 10 = 59.5 st. Reduce the resulting number of stitches by 5%: 59.5 st -5% = 56 st. 56 – a multiple of the rapport gum in 4 st.
  2. For size 40 cm, you need to dial 64 stitches – (40 cm * 17p (knitting density)) / 10 = 68 st. Reduce the resulting number of loops by 5%: 68 st – 5%= 64 st – a multiple of the gum rapport in 4 loops.
  3. For size 45 cm, you need to dial 72 st – (45 cm * 17p (knitting density)) / 10 = 76 st. Reduce the resulting number of loops by 5%: 76 st – 5% = 72 p. 72 – a multiple of the rapport of the gum in 4 st

Number of rows for knitting a hat

  1. For a head circumference of 35 cm, the standard cap length is 14 cm or 31 rows = 14 cm * 22 r. (knitting density))/10
  2. For a head circumference of 40 cm, the standard cap length is 16 cm or 35 rows = 16 cm * 22 r. (knitting density))/10
  3. For a head circumference of 45 cm, the standard cap length is 17 cm or 37 rows = 17 cm * 22 r. (knitting density))/10

Calculation of rows of decreases

  1. For a head circumference of 35 cm, the number of stittches in 1 wedge is 14 st. = 56 st. / 4. The number of rows of decreases will be 26r. = 14 r. * 2 – 2.
  2. For a head circumference of 40 cm, the number of stittches in 1 wedge is 16 st = 64 st / 4. The number of rows of decreases – 30r. = 16 p. * 2 – 2.
  3. For a head circumference of 45 cm, the number of stittches in 1 wedge is 18 st. = 72 st. / 4. The number of rows of decreases is 34r. = 18 r. * 2 – 2.

Number of rows before the start of decreases:

  1. Size 35 cm: 5 p. = 31 p. – 26 p.
  2. Size 40 cm: 5 p. = 35 p. – 30 p.
  3. Size 45 cm: 3 p. = 37 p. – 34 p.
